My APPROACH

My therapeutic approach stems from an integrative psychotherapy standpoint. You may be wondering what integrative psychotherapy is, so let me explain. It simply means that I use a wide range of different therapeutic approaches, some you may of heard of and some you may not, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Humanistic, Psychodynamic and Systemic. It is my belief that no one theory, therapeutic technique or approach can fully explain or work for all clients because human beings are diverse and complex individuals. I believe that practicing as an integrative psychotherapist allows me to fully support clients and adapt to their needs and goals to facilitate change in the individual’s life.

It is my opinion that I am not here to fix an individual or to tell them what to do, I am merely the facilitator in the process of therapy. It is my responsibility as a therapist to highlight both adaptive and maladaptive feelings, thoughts and behaviours that are either serving as a useful function or hindering the client from being their authentic self. If the client wishes to acknowledge and commits to exploring and working on these, then as a therapist I can facilitate that. I truly believe that the therapeutic relationship and alliance between the therapist and the client is extremely important and is the foundation of the therapeutic process. I strive to create a trustworthy, honest, compassionate, safe and empathetic environment. When the foundation of empathy, compassion, trust, honesty and a sense of safety is created then true change can occur.

I believe that the client is the expert in their own lives and those who engage in therapy have the power and capabilities to create the change they want. The relationship between the client and myself as a therapist is one of collaboration, where we work together with the hope and goal that positive change can occur. Change is possible but it takes commitment and work.

ABOUT ME

I am a fully accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) and I adhere to their Professional Code of Ethics. I have a M.Sc. in Psychotherapy which I obtained from Dublin City University. I also have a B.Sc. in Psychology obtained from Dublin City University. My final year Masters dissertation was on the topic of intimate partner violence among gay men in Ireland. I was selected to present my findings at the European Conference on Domestic Violence 2021 which was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

I am hugely proud of my academic achievements to date but what I hold equally in high regard is my ability to be an everyday human being in the room with another human being, not just a professional. I have a deep passion and love for the work that I do. It is a great privilege to work with people and walk alongside them on their journey of exploration and change.
