Frequently asked Questions

what is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

The terms are used interchangeably but the main difference between counselling and psychotherapy lies in their focus and depth:

  • Counselling is typically short-term and focuses on addressing specific, immediate issues such as stress, grief, or relationship problems. It provides guidance and practical solutions to help people manage current challenges.

  • Psychotherapy is usually longer-term and dives deeper into emotional, psychological, and behavioural patterns. It aims to address more complex mental health issues, exploring underlying causes and fostering deeper self-awareness and long-term change.

What can I/we expect at our first session?

The initial session is the time for you to start to share your story, talk about your goals and what you would like to change. Another important aspect of the first session is deciding if we are a good fit. Do I seem like someone you can trust and work with going forward? We are establishing a relationship that will become the foundation for working together. You will come up with your goals that you would like to achieve from attending therapy and we will create a plan to help you get there.

What can I help with?

At present I conduct therapy online with individuals 18 years old or older and couples. I have dealt with a wide variety of presenting issues including but not limited to depression, anxiety, panic attack, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, phobias, trauma, grief, suicidal ideation, stress management, self-harm, stress management, sex related issues,  narcissistic abuse, domestic violence, addiction issues and sexual abuse. I work with individuals aged 18 years and older and couples.

how often do i need to attend sessions?

Psychotherapy is most effective when clients attend once a week. To begin, we will meet once a week. Attending therapy weekly is beneficial because it ensures consistency and momentum, allowing for continuous progress without long gaps. Weekly sessions provide regular support, help build a strong therapeutic relationship, and allow deeper exploration of issues. They also offer timely intervention for any new concerns, making it easier to stay focused and accountable in your therapeutic journey.

How long will I be in therapy?

The duration of therapy varies depending on your individual needs, goals, and the issues you're addressing. As an integrative therapist, I adapt my approach depending on your individual needs. It is my experience that clients get more from the process by committing to the therapeutic process for a number of months, rather than weeks

Ultimately, the length of therapy depends on your personal goals and how quickly you feel you're making progress.
